La publicación, resultado del concurso ‘La ciudad, patrimonio de todos’, de la convocatoria Ciudad y Patrimonio, del Instituto Distrital de Patrimonio Cultural–, se constituye en una oportunidad única para fomentar en la ciudadanía el aprecio por particulares elementos  como es lo escultórico en entornos hídricos.

El agua en Bogotá ha marcado el devenir de esta ciudad. No sólo desde un punto de vista ambiental en donde se constituye como recurso  invaluable, sino desde una mirada histórica en la que puede ser entendida como un dispositivo para observar, reflexionar y entender la trayectoria de la capital a lo largo de los siglos.

Demarcada por los dos grandes ríos que definieron los límites de la ciudad y que fueron denominados Vicachá (San Francisco) y Manzanares (San Agustín),  la capital fue expandiéndose para dar paso al servicio ofrecido por las aguateras y por las fuentes de agua donde podía recogerse el preciado líquido.

Paulatinamente, los espacios públicos de la ciudad fueron articulando ricas muestras de patrimonio cultural mueble (esculturas, monumentos, fuentes) con el agua y su recorrido. Si bien hoy en día algunos de esos monumentos permanecen, otros han sido modificados a tal punto que han tenido un cambio importante respecto a su función original.
